Habitat for Humanity Adopt-a-day event - September 20, 2008
| This is our second Habitat for Humanity adopt-a-day event. The September weather was beautiful - nice and sunny, not hot but also not cold. Our task of the day was to build the back porch to the house. Our crew leader David was amazing and he showed us exactly what to do and how to do it. Afterwards, we interviewed a family living in one of the completed Habitat for Humanity houses. Asking the mother of 5 children regarding to how she thinks Habitat for Humanity has benefited her children,. she explains that in the past, she lived in a dangerous environment where drugs and profanity were common sight for her children in and around her apartment building, and she was worried about how her children might be negatively influenced. In her new neighbourhood, her children can now grow up in a positive environment outside of drugs and violence. |

Habitat for Humanity Adopt a day build event - August 5, 2008
Today was the first Habitat for Humanity build event- Habitat for Humanity has a program where companies and schools can come to their construction site to help build houses for the poor for a day, and the tasks depends on the phase of construction. The day started off nice and sunny, and we were fortunate that it rained only after we were done! Our task of the day was to paint the living room, stairway and closets to prepare for the installation of the carpet later in the week. At lunch, we found this pizza store with only 1 table and 1 worker and ordered 3 large pizzas. We found a nice picnic table outside and went there for lunch. After lunch, it was time to apply the second coat of paint. We were very fortunate to have a very helpful crew leader - Paul - who taught us how to master the art of painting a house. By the end of the day, we were all experts at painting and ready to send in our resumes to our local painting companies.
An article describing our day at the Habitat for Humanity construction site can be found here. |
